Woman Alone, Baxter.  A true story of a feisty Christian woman working in Riyadh who is abducted and incarcerated, and the dedicated, devout Muslim woman directly responsible for her salvation. A story of friendship, the bond of fearsome feminine strength and the quest for personal freedom. Adapted from the original book and directed by Christo Davids, with Lee-Ann van Rooi in the title role. Saturday, Sunday

Cry Havoc, Rosebank Theatre. Written by Tom Coash, this is an unnerving East-West love story about a naive British writer and an Egyptian university student who covertly live as lovers. Surrounded by poverty, religious fundamentalism and political repression, these educated, morally centred, yet disenfranchised men pursue divergent paths towards escape and extremism. Sizwe Banzi Is Dead, Baxter, Rondebosch. Following its resounding success in the United States earlier this year, this South African classic starring Mncedisi Shabangu and Atandwa Kani has returned to the Baxter. It’s 40 years since John Kani and Winston Ntshona won the Best Actor Tony Award for their performances in the play, which they co-created with Athol Fugard. And now John Kani returns as director, with his son in the role which he made famous. Friday, Saturday

Akwaba, Baxter, Rondebosch. Phumela is a young girl who has always struggled to get what she wants in life. Just as she gets to a stage where things are starting to go well, she receives the devastating news that she is HIV-positive. How will she cope, and can she rebuild her life once more?

Bergvliet Food Fair, Bergvliet Methodist church. Think old school vs new! With good food, company, shopping, live music and games! Challenge your mates to a game of cards, twister or giant jenga if you like. There will even be fun activities to keep the little ones busy too. Till 9 pm.

Matthew van der Want, Alma Café, Rosebank. Van der Want’s live performance has been described as follows: ‘His cutting insights into matters of the heart, and satirical take on the music industry have probably made him a few enemies, but anyone with an ounce of self respect or taste should not be able to deny the talent behind the f*** off attitude.’

MARKETS

Earth Fair Market, Tokai. One of the best selection of fresh produce shopping traders in the Cape. It’s a well-established, indoor, conveniently situated market with lots of parking.

Jolly Carp Organic Market, Retreat. Don’t miss the yummy lamb curry, butter chicken and breyani at this market – not to mention special curry paste with all the ingredients to make two pots of curry.  Including the Young Authors’ Club from 11am till 12 noon!.

Rondebosch Village Market, Rondebosch Library. It’s a small market but the quality is outstanding: get there early before all the beautiful organic produce, bakes, jams and cheese are sold out!

Lions Craft Market, Hout Bay. Check out African curios, pottery, wire crafts, ostrich eggs, wooden sculptures, second-hand book stores and even pony rides. Food stalls include a Malay kitchen.
