Increase in thefts from cars – released prisoners suspected

Broken car window

There has been a dramatic increase in thefts from motor vehicles in Wynberg over the past weeks. Police suspect that it is the work of a number of criminals recently released from prison, says WRRA community safety committee member Julian Emdon.

The majority of thefts have occurred where something has been left visible inside the vehicle.

“The thefts are drug-motivated and while an ordinary person might not think it reasonable to smash a window to steal a jersey, someone in the depths of a severe drug addiction will not think the same way,” Emdon warned.

Residents are warned not to leave anything visible in their vehicles when parked on the streets and advise their neighbours and guests to do the same, says Tim Jackson, chairman: Wynberg West Community Subforum.

Jackson shared the following tips:

  • Please report any incidence of crime to SAPS as well as suspicious behaviour.
  • Be especially vigilant on bin days.
  • In an emergency call the Wynberg SAPS patrol van on 082-378-7747
