Wynberg taxis tamed

The Wynberg Sector 1 Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) has been up and running for less than three months and already it’s notched up its first success.

Following an NHW project to count taxis operating off-route (i.e. in residential streets), Nancy Krisch of the NHW approached the SAPS and ward councillor Elizabeth Brunette for help with the problem.

As a result, a number of operations were conducted in and around Wellington Road over the past month with the assistance of Metro police, the SAPS and the Cape Town traffic department. A total of 97 fines worth R173 500 were issued. Last week alone 12 off-route taxis were impounded.

Enforcement will continue to try and bring the problem of off-route taxis under control, says Eugene Dreyer of the NHW.
