On Friday 21 February 2014 a fire broke out in the roof of 27 Orient Road, damaging the rafters. Concerned Residents committee member Graham Weir called the fire brigade, who responded promptly and extinguished the fire.

The fire was caused by illegal occupants  squatting in the roof of the property.

The fire followed  at least two incidents of trespassing onto neighbouring properties by homeless people  living in the deserted house.

This latest incident prompted the Concerned Residents to draw up a petition to Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille urging that the City enforces its own bylaws and secure the property.
